Gordon discloses conversation with Van Dijk post Newcastle United's red card incident (Liverpool FC captain)
Newcastle United secured a thrilling 3-2 victory against Liverpool in a tense Premier League encounter at St. James' Park, thanks to a 100th-minute winner from Rio Ngumoha.
The match took an unexpected turn when Anthony Gordon, who was deployed in an emergency striker role, was shown a straight red card for raking his studs down Virgil van Dijk's calf. The red card was issued following a review by match official Simon Hooper using VAR.
Gordon's dismissal seemed to have put Liverpool in the driver's seat, as Newcastle went into halftime a goal down and trailed by more after the restart due to Hugo Ekitike's strike. However, Bruno Guimaraes and Will Osula scored for Newcastle to draw level, setting the stage for Ngumoha's dramatic late winner.
This was not Gordon's first red card, as he had previously been sent off against Brighton and Hove Albion in the 2024/25 season and vs West Ham United in the 2023/24 season. After the match, he apologised to his teammates, fans, and Virgil van Dijk for his tackle.
Gordon expressed his pride in the time he spent on the pitch and the atmosphere at St. James' Park, stating that his intentions were pure, and he mistimed the tackle. Eddie Howe, the coach of Newcastle United, used Gordon during the match against Liverpool.
Despite his suspension for Newcastle's next three Premier League matches versus Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Bournemouth, Gordon will be eligible for Newcastle's Champions League fixtures during his suspension.
The win lifts Newcastle to seventh in the table, level on points with West Ham United and just three behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. The Magpies will look to build on this momentum when they face Leeds United in their next Premier League match.
