Government Coalition Remains Hopeful on Consensus for Selection of Latvia's Central Bank Chief Candidate
The race for the presidency of the Bank of Latvia is heating up, with three candidates still in the running ahead of the elections scheduled for December 19. According to Aivars Lembergs, the leader of the SilinĖa faction, all coalition parties have expressed their commitment to their respective candidates.
The candidates are MaĖrtin˧sĖ KazaĖks, nominated by New Unity, Reinis BeĖrzin˧sĖ, nominated by ZZS, National Alliance, and United List, and PaĖvels Kuzmins, nominated by For Stability!. SilinĖa has confirmed that his party, SilinĖa, will stick to its candidate, while ZZS has also reaffirmed its support for BeĖrzin˧sĖ. The Progressives and For Stability! have also indicated that they are unlikely to change their candidates.
SilinĖa believes that the coalition can still agree on one candidate before the elections, stating that the public debate will help MPs to make their choice. He has also noted that a majority of the Saeima is needed to elect the Bank of Latvia president, and he considers the competition for the position as normal.
It is worth noting that the election of the LB President with opposition votes does not equate to a question of coalition stability, according to SilinĖa. However, part of the opposition expects changes in the coalition, but SilinĖa has not mentioned any specific changes.
The Bank of Latvia's president is elected by the Saeima, not the government, and the elections are still scheduled for December 19. BeĖrzin˧sĖ's nomination has been submitted by MPs from the opposition factions National Alliance and United List, in addition to ZZS.
The candidates' stances on key economic issues, such as inflation, interest rates, and the overall health of the Latvian economy, are expected to be a focus during the public debate. The elections for the Bank of Latvia's president are a crucial step in ensuring the stability and success of Latvia's economy, and the public will be watching closely as the candidates present their visions for the future.
