Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 Held in Indore

The Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 took place on June 13, 2025, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Organised by the Department of Fisheries under India's Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the event focused on development and advancements in inland fisheries and aquaculture in India.

The meeting aimed to increase productivity, sustainability, species diversification, and income enhancement for fish farmers. Key highlights and agenda included showcasing government initiatives and schemes, promoting innovative technologies, emphasising species diversification, and discussing policies that address challenges like sustainability and climate adaptation.

The event was organised jointly by the Department of Fisheries and the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), reflecting a strong governmental push for the integrated development of inland fisheries and aquaculture in India.

During the event, the Union Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various fisheries projects. Notably, since 2015, the Government has invested ₹38,572 crore in the fisheries sector, leading to a 104% increase in annual fish production.

Technical sessions focused on key areas such as reservoir leasing policies, sustainable riverine and wetland fisheries, strengthening input supply, and unlocking the potential of cold-water fisheries. The event also witnessed participation from fisheries ministers of inland states/UTs, officials from the Department of Fisheries, State Fisheries Departments, and ICAR Institutes.

Certificates were distributed to beneficiaries, including fisheries Cooperatives, FFPOs, and Fisheries Start-ups. The event also included the launch of the Reservoir Fisheries Cluster at Halali Dam and the foundation stone laying of other PMMSY-supported projects.

In addition to the Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025, India participated in the 2nd Session of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) Council as Vice President in Nice, France. The IALA Council is the key decision-making body of the intergovernmental organization responsible for marine aids to navigation. India's election as Vice President of IALA during the 1st General Assembly in Singapore reflects its growing global influence and strategic maritime vision.

The Indian delegation was led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterway. Initiatives of the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) include integration of vessel traffic services across 12 major ports and planned international training programs at the Marine Navigation Training Institute in Kolkata.

The event was conducted in hybrid mode, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation. India extended a formal invitation to all member states to attend the 3rd IALA General Assembly in December 2025 and the 21st IALA Conference in 2027, both to be held in Mumbai.

To ensure fair access to train tickets during the event, authorised ticketing agents of Indian Railways will not be permitted to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window for AC classes from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM, and for non-AC classes from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM. From 1st July 2025, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings on IRCTC's official website and mobile app. Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for online Tatkal bookings from 15th July 2025. Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents will require OTP authentication sent to the mobile number provided by the user at the time of booking from 15th July 2025.

India's longstanding association with IALA and its significant progress in marine aids to navigation and vessel traffic services were also highlighted during the event. Inland fisheries and aquaculture now account for over 75% of total fish production, growing by 140% to 147.37 lakh tonnes. The event concluded with a focus on fishers being awarded Kisan Credit Cards and aquaculture insurance aimed at targeted insurance coverage, digital access, and focused support for marginalised communities.
