Grand jury accusations against an Amish woman for the deadly drowning of her 4-year-old son, stemming from alleged 'spiritual delusion'.
In a shocking turn of events, Ruth Miller, a 40-year-old resident of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, has been indicted for the aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and child endangering of her four-year-old son, Vincen.
The tragic incident occurred on a Saturday morning in August, at Atwood Lake. According to the indictment, Ruth Miller drowned her son during a "spiritual delusion."
The events leading up to the tragedy began at around 1 a.m., when Ruth and her husband, Marcus Miller, allegedly believed that God was speaking to them. They ventured to the dock at the lake and, along with their children, jumped into the water. The trio managed to get out of the water unharmed, but the incident prompted a response by rangers and deputies.
Later that morning, Ruth Miller placed Vincen on a golf cart and drove it into the lake, ultimately drowning her son. The crash of the golf cart into the lake led to a search operation, during which Vincen's body was discovered near the dock on Saturday, and Marcus Miller's body was found in the same area the following day, on Aug. 24.
Ruth Miller is currently imprisoned at the Tuscarawas County Jail and will be arraigned on September 8 in front of Judge Michael J. Ernest. The indictment also includes three counts of domestic violence against her 15-year-old daughter and twin 18-year-old sons.
As deputies questioned Ruth Miller, she reportedly spoke about placing her son in the water, "to give him to God." The Millers had reportedly believed they were performing tasks to try and prove their faith to God.
Authorities learned that Vincen and Marcus Miller were missing after the Millers brought their family from Holmes County to Atwood Lake the weekend of Aug. 23. There is no public information indicating that Marcus Miller, Ruth Miller's husband, was in custody in Tuscarawas County before his arrest on September 8.
The community is left in shock and mourning, as the case continues to unfold. Our thoughts are with the affected family and friends during this difficult time.
