"Guernsey Arts' Latest Art Endeavor"
In the charming islands of Jersey and Guernsey, a cultural explosion is set to take place this August and September. From captivating art exhibitions to thought-provoking theatrical performances, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
Let's start with the Fox Open Art Competition 2025, a joint venture by Jersey Arts Centre and Guernsey Arts. This year's judge is Tom Wood, a renowned artist who will also be exhibiting his own work in the Berni Gallery before the competition exhibition. The competition is open to artists from both Bailiwicks who are aged 12 and over and resident in the Bailiwick of Jersey or Bailiwick of Guernsey. The competition closes at 5pm on Tuesday 9 September 2025, and more information about Tom Wood can be found here.
Moving on to the world of theatre, 'Radio Silence', a new musical set against the backdrop of the Occupation of Guernsey in World War Two, will take place at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts next week. This poignant production explores the complex relationships of oppressor and the oppressed, resilience of the Guernsey folk, and universal themes of communication, good and evil, and what freedom means. Tickets can be obtained online, and 'Radio Silence' will have four shows between the 28th and 30th of August.
For those interested in visual arts, the Folk and Costume Museum at Saumarez Park is hosting an intriguing exhibition titled 'Discoveries from The Shrouded Isles of Sarnia'. This narrative surrounding new Island Folklore created by artist James Kitts is open daily from 10am to 5pm, closing at 2pm on the final day. James Kitts, a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker from Cornwall, now living in Guernsey, has developed a new mythology of magical creatures, some of which he has built as lifesized puppets. If the stories are true, Sarnia exists right on top of Guernsey, on a different plane of existence.
In case you're wondering, one of the puppets, skekSalt, is on a journey to uncover the mysteries of the rumoured hidden realm, Sarnia.
Meanwhile, Maggie Le Conte's 'HeARTfelt' art exhibition is at Art at the Park Gallery from September 2nd to 26th. Maggie Le Conte's paintings feature intricate details and depict various scenes such as Stonehenge, Albecq rocks, and Victorian walled garden. Unfortunately, online information about Maggie Le Conte and her artwork does not provide much detail about the artist showing the exhibition at the Art at the Park Gallery in September. However, more information can be found here.
The Folk and Costume Museum at Saumarez Park has free entry and is accessible, making it a great family-friendly destination. Tickets for the exhibition are free with the Discovery Pass and can be obtained from the front desk. The Greenhouse Gallery, located within Candie Museum, also offers a free exhibition, 'Discoveries from The Shrouded Isles of Sarnia', which opens on the 30th of August and runs until the 12th of October.
Finally, for those who enjoy a good beat, there's a Disco event at the Thomas De La Rue on September 6th. This event features all female DJ's, groove, soul, electronic, funk, hip hop, and more. Disco attire is encouraged, and the event is free.
So, whether you're a theatre lover, art enthusiast, or a disco aficionado, there's something for everyone in Jersey and Guernsey this August and September. Don't miss out on these exciting events!
