Guide for DGT 'H' Sticker Eligibility, Advantages, and Purchasing Locations

In October 2024, the rules for historic vehicles in Spain underwent a refresh, introducing the 'H' sticker. This reflective yellow disc with a black "H" is a visual cue for police and local wardens that a car is allowed through ZBE checkpoints.

The 'H' sticker serves as a pass for historic vehicles to enter Low Emission Zones (ZBE) in Spain. To qualify for this coveted sticker, a car must be 30 years or more from first registration or build and must retain its original character.

The DGT, Spain's traffic department, splits classics into two groups: Group A and Group B. Group A vehicles have a Spanish ordinary number plate and ITV (roadworthiness test) in date. These vehicles must be essentially as they left the factory. On the other hand, Group B vehicles don't have a Spanish ordinary number plate or ITV in date but still meet the historic definition.

To qualify for the 'H' sticker, a car must be confirmed by an expert appraisal from an officially recognized expert, such as a certified inspector at TÜV or DEKRA. This ensures that the vehicle is largely in original condition, well maintained, and serves to preserve automotive cultural heritage.

For Group B vehicles, which are often imports or cars on historic plates, the paperwork required includes confirmation of historic status. If a car has already been catalogued as historic under the DGT framework, the process of obtaining the 'H' sticker is simplified.

The 'H' sticker does not grant free parking; local rules on parking or congestion charges still apply unless stated otherwise. It also does not exempt the car from speed limits, parking rules, or local restrictions unrelated to emissions. Furthermore, the 'H' sticker does not grant entry to ZBEs if the car does not meet the historic definition.

The 'H' sticker is more than just a pass for historic vehicles. It is an identity card for older cars that have kept their character, as per Royal Decree 892/2024. The 'H' sticker allows owners of historic vehicles to attend events, visit workshops, or drive without second-guessing every municipal boundary in Low Emission Zones (ZBEs).

The 'H' sticker can be purchased at estancos, Correos, or DGT offices. Whether you're a proud owner of a classic car or just appreciate the beauty and history they represent, the 'H' sticker is a welcome addition to Spain's road regulations.
