Guide for local politicians: tactics for countering hate speeches and provocation

In the heart of Germany, the city of Lünen is set to host a workshop aimed at strengthening women in local politics. Scheduled for August 29, 2025, at the Bürgerzentrum Gahmen, the workshop titled 'Strategies in Dealing with Hate and Hostility - Strengthening Women in Local Politics' is an initiative of Heike Tatsch, the Equal Opportunities Officer of the city.

The workshop is open to women running for democratic parties or voter communities in the upcoming local and integration council elections on September 14, 2025. Ten women from different parties and voter communities participated in the initial event, demonstrating a strong interest in the topic.

The first part of the workshop discussed the definition, consequences, and legal options for countering hate and hostility. Heike Tatsch, the Equal Opportunities Officer, emphasized the importance of supporting women in local politics who are affected by hate and hostility, including sexualized violence.

The second part of the workshop focused on developing strategies to protect against online harassment and sharing personal experiences. The Equal Opportunities Officer highlighted the role of local politics in making a difference in the local environment and how such incidents discourage or drive away potential candidates.

The success of the workshop has led to plans for a follow-up event next year. The initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage more women to participate in local politics and create a more inclusive and equitable environment.

The workshop aims to strengthen women in local politics, providing them with the tools and strategies needed to navigate the challenges they may face. As the local and integration council elections approach, this workshop is a timely and essential resource for women seeking to make a difference in their communities.
