Hannover's Clearance Operation Finalized: Successful Removal of Fighting Personnel in Hannover-Misburg
In the district of Misburg-Süd in Hannover, a World War II bomb was identified and successfully defused on Monday. The bomb, a British 500-pound bomb equipped with an impact fuse, was discovered in a water-filled retention basin during exploratory work on a property on Anderter Straße.
Upon the discovery, a safety zone with a radius of 1,000 meters was established for further investigation by specialists from the Lower Saxony Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD). A total of around 340 personnel from the fire department, police, aid organizations, and the explosive ordnance disposal service were involved in the operation.
At 4:30 PM, around 3,350 people from the affected district were asked to leave the evacuation area. The safety zone was lifted at 8:25 PM, and all affected residents were able to return to their homes after the explosive site was checked.
The organisation that identified the explosive device and was involved in its defusal was the bomb disposal unit (Sprengstoffräumkommando) of the Hannover police. The EOD diver defused the explosive at 7:43 PM after the preparatory work was finished.
Deputy Mayor Dr. Axel von der Ohe and the deputy head of the Fire Department, Gregor Fleischmann, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the measures. Both praised the professional work of the volunteer and full-time personnel and the excellent cooperation of the affected citizens of the Misburg-Süd district.
Gregor Fleischmann acknowledged the special challenges presented by the explosive ordnance find, particularly the location in a body of water. The clearance forces reported safety in the evacuation area at 6:57 PM, and the EOD experts were able to begin their work.
Inquiries can be directed to the Fire Department Hannover, with contact information provided. The citizen's hotline received 101 calls by 8:25 PM. Approximately 150 evacuees sought shelter at the care facility set up at the Pestalozzi School in Eisteichweg.
