Harmful blue algae found in the New Pond

In the heart of a local park, the New Pond has recently seen an unusual appearance of blue-green algae. This bacterial bloom, scientifically known as Cyanobacteria, is causing concern among health authorities.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für das Badewesen (DGfdB), responsible for the quality control and setting threshold values for the closure of bathing lakes in Germany, has been closely monitoring the situation. They establish bathing-specific norms and operational guidelines, including when to close bathing sites based on these thresholds.

Despite the cool weather, the unusually warm and dry spring has created favourable conditions for the growth of blue-green algae. The current bloom in the New Pond, which is not a swimming lake, is still in its early stages. However, the appearance of a blue-green algae "carpet-like spread" in a swimming lake is a reason for precautionary measures and potential closure.

Fortunately, since the New Pond is not a swimming lake, there is currently no direct danger to humans. However, the health risk from blue-green algae is primarily through drinking the water, such as when a dog drinks while swimming. Some species of blue-green algae produce a toxin, posing a health risk to animals and humans.

The health authorities are taking the necessary steps to control the quality of the New Pond. They will continue to monitor the blue-green algae growth and its potential impact on the ecosystem. Further monitoring is crucial to ensure the safety of the local wildlife and to prevent any potential health risks in the future.

The peak season for blue-green algae is usually in mid to late August. Until then, the authorities will continue their vigilant monitoring of the New Pond and will take necessary precautions if the situation worsens.

While the appearance of blue-green algae in the New Pond is concerning, it serves as a reminder for everyone to be aware of the conditions in local water bodies and to take precautions when spending time near them.
