Harsh GDC 2025 billboard advertisement serves as retaliation for Google Stadia job losses
In the heart of San Francisco's Union Square, a billboard has caught the attention of passersby. The billboard features an enlarged head of a character named Gunther Harrison, who is the CEO of Alta Interglobal in the upcoming game, Revenge of the Savage Planet. The billboard asks, "Has a Harrison fired YOU lately?"
This satirical reference is a nod to the game's troubled past, which is deeply rooted in the gaming industry. The original Savage Planet was developed by Typhoon Games, a studio that was bought by Google in 2019. However, on the same day that Journey to the Savage Planet launched as an exclusive game for Google's Stadia cloud gaming service, the developers found themselves out of work.
Typhoon Games, now known as Raccoon Logic, bought back the rights to Savage Planet after leaving Stadia with investment from Tencent. The team was determined to bring the sequel to players' hands, and Revenge of the Savage Planet was born.
The billboard's message is a playful jab at a different Harrison, but there is no information available to confirm his employment at Google. The developers, in their promotional site for the game, write that their full team met the same fate after launching Journey to the Savage Planet. They also pledge to make a donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association for every person who scans the billboard and visits the site.
Meanwhile, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, Roblox Cube 3D AI tools were announced, and an anime teaser for Ark: Lost Colony was unveiled. But the buzz around San Francisco is undeniably about Revenge of the Savage Planet, which is set to launch on May 8, 2025.
The game promises to be a thrilling adventure, filled with humour and a nod to the industry's past. As the countdown to its release begins, gaming enthusiasts are eagerly waiting to see how Raccoon Logic will avenge the Savage Planet.
