Haskenau municipality unveils new bridge structure as a replacement

In the picturesque town of Haskenau, a significant milestone was reached as the newly built bridge over the Werse river opened for pedestrian and bicycle traffic on September 4th. The event was attended by Mayor Markus Lewe and District Mayor Benedikt Spangenberg, among others.

The new construction, a durable steel structure, is more than just a replacement for the old wooden bridge that was closed in spring 2022 due to severe damage to its structure. It is a crucial link in MΓΌnster's bicycle network 2.0, connecting Handorf and Gelmer, and popular for tourist bike rides as part of the Werse cycle path.

The main field of the bridge, measuring 35 meters long, 3.50 meters wide, and 1.95 meters high, is the largest individual component, weighing 12.5 tons. The bridge's main field was equipped with a vibration damper due to its large span and lightweight construction. The new surface of the bridge is made of fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) and is slip-resistant, ensuring safety for all users.

The approximately 88-meter-long bridge was straightened in its alignment, and the four bridge sections were pre-assembled in a factory. The old wooden bridge's replacement construction cost more than two million euros, a significant investment that was partially refunded by the city of MΓΌnster through federal funds for investments in cycling infrastructure under the "City and Country" special program, allowing them to recover 90% of the cost.

The new bridge's design features two bold green tones, which harmonize with its surroundings, and the map illustrates its location over the Werse at Haskenau. The manufacturer of the on-site prepared bridge section, consisting of four parts made of steel, was most likely a specialized steel construction company or fabricator commissioned for the project, but without specific details, the exact manufacturer cannot be identified.

The restoration of this bridge re-establishes an important cycling connection between Handorf and Gelmer, significant for local traffic. The bridge is not just a means of transportation but also a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable and accessible infrastructure.
