Heavy flooding hitting multiple regions across Germany

In the heart of western Germany, the city of Cologne is bracing for a potential flood crisis. According to the latest forecasts, the flood level on the Rhine is expected to reach up to 8.80 meters in the next few hours. This could pose a significant threat to the city, particularly its historic old town.

Flood warnings have been issued across most federal states in Germany, with a few exceptions. Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Brandenburg have so far been spared from these warnings.

The responsibility for flood protection measures in the affected areas, including Cologne, lies primarily with the respective state governments and their specialized authorities. In North Rhine-Westphalia, where Cologne is located, state and local authorities manage flood protection planning and implementation in coordination with federal support structures.

Elsewhere in Germany, similar situations are unfolding. Water levels have risen significantly in the Hesse regions of Upper Fulda, Ulster, Kinzig, and Nidda. The heavy rainfall from Wednesday and remaining snowmelt have caused river levels in the northern and eastern mid-mountain ranges to reach level 4, indicating a risk of flooding in built-up areas on a large scale in Bavaria.

In Cologne, the flood defences are expected to protect the old town up to 11.30 meters, a new record high. However, when the flood level reaches 8.30 meters, shipping on the Rhine will be suspended.

As the situation continues to evolve, authorities are urging residents to stay informed and heed any warnings or instructions issued by local authorities. The cooperation between federal, state, and local governments, as well as the support structures in place, will be crucial in managing this potential crisis.
