Headline: Elderly Woman Falls Victim to Grandparent Scam in Heidelberg, Police Urge Public for Information

In a chilling incident reported by the Police Headquarters Mannheim via news aktuell, fraudsters successfully stole valuables and jewelry worth a five-figure sum from an elderly woman in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, on Friday.

The suspects, posing as court officials, falsely claimed that the woman's daughter had caused a serious traffic accident and needed to pay a high bail. Believing the call was genuine, the woman took a taxi to the handover location in Heidelberg and handed over her valuables to an unknown collector around 18:00. The suspect then fled on foot in an unknown direction after the collection.

The Criminal Police in Würzburg are currently investigating the incident and are urging anyone who may have observed the collection or has other useful information to contact them on 0931/457-1732.

The Police Headquarters of Lower Franconia launched the "Leg' auf!" prevention campaign at the end of 2020 to inform, sensitize, and provide behavioral tips to older people and their relatives about phenomena such as "grandparent scams" and "false police officers". In July 2022, the campaign "I protect grandma and grandpa" started at schools in Lower Franconia, with the Lower Franconian police relying on the support of young people and students to make grandparents and older acquaintances aware of such scams by perpetrators.
