Helicopter crash involving a Mi-17 training aircraft results in the tragic loss of five lives, among them two major officers, According to ISPR.
In a tragic turn of events, an MI-17 helicopter crashed in Gilgit Baltistan's Diamer district on Monday, claiming the lives of all five individuals on board. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the incident.
The helicopter was on a routine training flight when it developed a technical fault and met with an unfortunate accident. The crash occurred near Hudor village, about 12 kilometers away from Thakdas Cantonment, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
The five individuals who died were identified as Major Atif (pilot in command), Major Faisal (co-pilot), Naib Subedar Maqbool (flight engineer), Havaldar Jahangir (crew chief), and Naik Amir (crew chief). Among them, three were technicians and two were pilots.
The crash occurred during a training mission, which is part of the routine activities of Army Aviation to maintain operational readiness. The ISPR stated that training missions are conducted for operational support, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed their deep grief and sorrow over the crash. They extended condolences to the families of the martyrs and prayed for patience and strength for the bereaved families. The leaders also prayed for the elevation of ranks of the martyrs in Jannah.
This incident is the latest in a series of deadly helicopter crashes in Pakistan in recent years. However, it is important to note that this incident did not involve the crash in Bajaur mentioned in the headline.
The Pakistan Army remains committed to ensuring readiness in all facets. The army's military aviation unit officially stated in 2023 that technical failure was the cause of the MI-17 helicopter crash in Diamer district, Gilgit-Baltistan.
The helicopter was performing a test landing on a newly proposed helipad in a mountainous tourist area when the accident occurred around 10:00 am on Monday. The incident did not involve any civilian casualties, and the area has been secured by the local authorities.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the brave individuals who lost their lives in this tragic incident. May they find solace and strength during these difficult times.
