High-altitude emergency shelters, numbering twelve, set up in Romania's Bucegi Mountains for crises
In a significant step towards enhancing safety for hikers and mountaineers in high-altitude areas, the Romanian authorities have installed the first of 12 planned mountain emergency shelters in the Bucegi Mountains.
The installation was carried out with the assistance of a Black Hawk helicopter and mountain rescue teams from Prahova county. The shelter, located at an altitude of 2,350 meters at the entrance to Cerdacul Vaăii Cerbului, on the route to Omu Peak, will serve as a secure point of shelter for people in distress in the mountains.
Each shelter, including the one in Bucegi Mountains, will be equipped with essential items such as two beds, solar-powered lighting, drinking water, a first-aid kit, sanitation facilities, and electric heating. For emergencies, the shelters will feature an alarm connected to the national 112 system.
Access to the shelters will be controlled by code to prevent misuse. The Departamentul pentru Situaţii de Urgenţă (DSU) is responsible for ensuring the safety of the emergency shelters. The operation marks the start of a program aimed at improving safety for hikers and climbers in high-altitude areas.
The International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR) typically coordinates the program. Once operational, the shelter will provide a much-needed refuge for those in need, contributing to a safer and more enjoyable mountain experience for all.
It is worth noting that the shelter in the Bucegi Mountains requires ground anchoring before it opens to the public. The shelters will also be inspected regularly to ensure safety standards are maintained.
This development is a testament to the Romanian authorities' commitment to the safety and well-being of outdoor enthusiasts. As more shelters are installed, the network of emergency facilities will grow, providing a vital lifeline for those venturing into the mountains.
