High-end merchandise: Coffee products now protected against theft in grocery stores
In recent years, coffee thefts have become a growing concern for supermarkets, with some instances occurring on a large scale. Last week alone, over 1,000 euros worth of coffee was stolen in a single day from a discount store in the Passau region.
This surge in coffee thefts can be attributed to the rising prices of the beverage, which have left a deep hole in many household budgets. The high cost of coffee has driven some individuals to choose the criminal path to acquire it. A 31-year-old man was recently arrested for allegedly stealing and reselling more than two tons of coffee in Hamburg.
The price increase of coffee is due to the high cost of the raw material, which has been gradually escalating in recent years. This has resulted in coffee prices skyrocketing in recent months, making it a luxury good for many, with some kilo packs costing up to 20 euros.
To combat this issue, drastic measures are being taken to protect coffee from theft in many markets. Security guards or individual protective measures are being employed, and some shelves of coffee, especially well-known brands, are now theft-proof and kept in a display case. In some stores, customers can only access the coffee upon request from the sales staff.
However, these measures have mixed reactions among honest customers. While some support the measures to prevent theft, others find the longer waits at the checkout or smaller product selections annoying.
Interestingly, coffee is cheaper in neighboring countries like the Netherlands or Poland compared to local supermarkets. This discrepancy in prices has raised questions about the distribution and pricing strategies of coffee companies.
As the coffee crisis continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve and what further measures will be taken to address this issue.
