In an exciting development for Wyoming high school basketball, the WHSAA has announced that a shot clock will be implemented for the 2026-27 season. The decision comes after some uncertainty about when schools would be able to get the necessary equipment installed.

The shot clock will last for 35 seconds, a duration similar to that used in professional and collegiate basketball. This change aims to prevent teams from stalling and holding the ball for extended periods, a practice that has been a source of frustration for many fans and players.

Riley Friday, a junior from Sheridan, believes the shot clock will not significantly impact their offensive style as it is already efficient. However, Friday acknowledges that some games have been affected by teams stalling, leading to fouls and free throws that can swing the game.

WHSAA Commissioner Trevor Wilson mentioned that most schools have been preparing for the shot clock era. Some schools, like the one working tirelessly for months in preparation, have already started adapting their strategies to accommodate the new rule.

With the shot clock, teams will need to respond more quickly than usual when the opposing team's shot clock is running out. This added pressure could lead to a more exciting and fast-paced game.

Riley Friday expresses excitement about the shot clock, stating that it prevents teams from stalling and holding the ball for extended periods. This change is expected to make games more enjoyable for both players and spectators.

The shot clock era in Wyoming high school basketball will begin in December 2026. However, teams wishing to experiment with a shot clock can do so in non-conference or non-quadrant games for the 2025-26 season. The WHSAA is allowing this trial run, and it applies to early season tournaments and invitationals but not regional or state tournaments.

It's worth noting that all states bordering Wyoming, except for Colorado, already use a shot clock in their high school basketball. This move by the WHSAA brings Wyoming closer to being in line with its neighbouring states.

This news is sure to be welcomed by basketball fans across Wyoming, as it promises a more dynamic and engaging high school basketball experience. The countdown to the shot clock era has begun!
