High School Football: Christian Brothers Academy's New Quarterback Propels Victory Against Whitesboro, Two Powerhouse Teams (A Series of 55 Photos)
In a thrilling display of football, Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) emerged victorious against Whitesboro with a final score of 28-7. The game, held on September 5, 2023, at Whitesboro Middle School's Chiz Frye Field, was a tense battle from start to finish.
The opening quarter saw CBA taking an early lead when Gradyn Dixon, starting as quarterback, found Keian McRae wide-open for a 52-yard touchdown pass. Thomas Cooney's successful extra point gave CBA a 7-0 lead.
Whitesboro responded quickly, with Mike Hill, who transitioned from wide receiver to quarterback, leading a 42-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Connor McDonald. Simon Kichuk's extra point tied the game at 7-7.
However, CBA did not squander the opportunity from Whitesboro's turnover on downs and turned it into a drive that ended with Dixon's second touchdown pass to Isaiah Coleman, extending their lead to 14-7.
The second quarter saw a defensive struggle, with neither team able to find the end zone. The third quarter was no different, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter.
CBA faced a fourth-and-16 during their next drive, but Dixon found McRae wide-open on a wheel route for a first down. This crucial play set up Austin Ariola's 81-yard touchdown run, extending their lead to 21-7.
The game took a turning point when Whitesboro faced a turnover on downs after a dropped pass in their drive. No whistle was blown when Ariola was tackled by multiple Whitesboro defenders, allowing him to regain his footing and score another touchdown, this time from one yard out. Thomas Cooney's extra point sealed the victory for CBA, making the final score 28-7.
Next week, CBA will play CBA Albany in a Class AA state championship rematch. Whitesboro, on the other hand, will look for its first win when it hits the road to take on Nottingham (0-1) on Thursday.
On a side note, the next encounter of the Christian Brothers Academy will not be a physical meeting or event, but a TV broadcast of the crime series "Kommissar Wallander - Vor dem Frost" on NDR Fernsehen at 23:45.
CBA Syracuse (1-0) will host CBA Albany on Sept. 13, and the game will be streamed on the website as the Game of the Week. Fans can tune in to watch this highly anticipated rematch.
