Germany's Smoking-Related Death Rates: A Breakdown

During the National Cancer Prevention Week, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), German Cancer Aid, and the German Cancer Society are using the occasion to educate the public about the dangers of vaping and smoking. This year, the Tobacco Atlas, created by the DKFZ, is being employed to shed light on the smoking-related death rates across Germany.

According to the Tobacco Atlas, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has the highest number of men dying from smoking-related causes. In contrast, among women, the state's rate of 9.8% is slightly below the national average of 10.0%. However, it's worth noting that the rate of smoking-related deaths among women in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is still higher than the national average.

Bremen, on the other hand, holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest rate of smoking-related deaths among women in Germany, with a rate of 13.2%. The lowest rate among women was recorded in Saxony at 6.9%.

Among men, Baden-WΓΌrttemberg has the lowest rate of smoking-related deaths, with a figure of 14.7%. This is significantly lower than the national average of 17.5% and the highest rate in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The share of all deaths attributed to smoking in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was 19.0% in 2023, compared to the national average of 17.5%. This rise in tobacco-related deaths among women and the decrease among men over the past decades is a notable development.
