Highway A2: Fatality and three critical injuries reported in severe collision

A tragic traffic accident occurred on the A2 motorway near Hannover-Lahe on Saturday evening at 17:29. The incident involved a Volkswagen Golf and a parked truck at the Varrelheide rest area (North).

The rescue operation was complex, requiring the truck's trailer to be lifted and the wreckage to be pulled out using a winch. The fire department and rescue service were on site with 52 personnel and 19 vehicles until 18:45.

Two passengers were able to leave the vehicle on their own or with the help of first responders. However, the driver trapped in the wreckage was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene. The three other accident victims—two women and one man—suffered severe injuries and were taken to hospitals in Hannover for further treatment.

The traffic accident investigation unit of the police has initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. No information can be provided yet on the exact ages of those involved or the extent of the damage.

The A2 motorway had to be completely closed in the westbound direction due to the landing of the rescue helicopter, causing significant traffic delays. The motorway has since reopened.
