Advantageous autumnal weather is heading towards vineyard growers - Hot, sunny end-of-summer conditions greet laborers in wine-producing areas
Good Harvest Expected for Thuringian Winemakers Amid Sunny Late Summer
Winemakers in Thuringia are looking forward to a promising harvest season, as the current sunny late summer weather is benefiting their vineyards. This optimism is shared by Sebastian Didt from the agricultural cooperative Gleina in Saxony-Anhalt, who stated that the expected yield and quality of their 46-hectare vineyards in the Weimar area are good.
The agricultural cooperative Gleina, located in Thuringia, grows 19 grape varieties, predominantly white wines such as Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. The winery in Bad Sulza, which boasts 50 hectares of vineyards, shares a similar sentiment. Kathrin Clauß, from the largest Thuringian winery in Bad Sulza, stated that the wine can now ripen well after recent rainfall.
The weather conditions this year have marked a notable difference compared to last year. Unlike last year, there have been no signs of rot in the vineyards of the agricultural cooperative in Gleina, despite recent rainfall. This is a positive development, as rot can significantly impact the quality and yield of the grapes.
The first small quantities of grapes for the upcoming Federweißen festival on the third weekend of September are to be harvested in the coming week. The Federweißen festival is a significant event for winemakers in Thuringia, and the good weather conditions are expected to result in a high-quality Federweißen this year.
Currently, not fully ripe grapes are being cut from the vines to achieve a uniform ripeness. This practice ensures that all the grapes are ready for harvest at the same time, which is crucial for the production of quality wine. The main harvest is expected to begin after the Federweißen festival.
Thuringia is home to five businesses that grow wine as their main income, and a further 17 have wine as a sideline or as part of their fruit production. This diversity in winemaking businesses contributes to the rich wine-growing culture in the region.
In conclusion, the sunny late summer weather and favourable weather conditions are promising signs for a bountiful harvest season in Thuringia. Winemakers are optimistic about the quality and yield of their grapes, and the upcoming Federweißen festival is eagerly anticipated.
