Hourei rebels deploy cluster bombs for the initial time in Israel
In a series of escalating events, the coastal city of Tel Aviv experienced a rocket alert on Friday evening. The Houthi militia in Yemen, who have been attacking Israel with rockets and drones since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, claimed responsibility for the attack, targeting the international airport in Tel Aviv.
According to media reports, a rocket part landed near the airport, causing a stir. However, the initial reports of casualties were unclear. Witnesses in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, reported heavy explosions as the attacks hit an oil facility and a power plant, resulting in flames and smoke.
This marked the first time such a rocket has been launched from Yemen, and it appears the Houthi militia used cluster munitions for the first time in a rocket attack on Israel. The use of cluster munitions, which contain multiple smaller bomblets designed to explode on impact, is a concerning development, as it violates international humanitarian law. Iran, a Houthi ally, was reported to have used cluster munitions during the 12-day war with Israel in June, as reported by Amnesty International.
In response to these attacks, Israel's air force has been conducting frequent airstrikes on militia targets in Yemen. On Sunday, the air force reportedly attacked targets in Yemen again, with the army stating that the rocket broke apart in the air. Israel's air defense system is capable of intercepting this type of munition.
The Houthi militia and Hamas in the Gaza Strip are allies of Iran, raising concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region. As the situation continues to develop, both sides remain vigilant, ready to respond to any further provocations.
