IGA 2027 Allocates €3 Million for City Centre Renovation
The city of Marl has made a significant contribution to the future-oriented design of urban spaces with its project "Ruhrmodern - Our City Administration". This project has not only received the third star within the framework of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027 but has also secured special funding within the event.
The IGA 2027 in the Ruhr Metropolis connects themes such as climate adaptation, sustainable urban development, culture, leisure, and building culture. The project "Ruhrmodern - Our City Administration" aligns perfectly with these themes, aiming to further develop the historic park from the 1920s, make it climate-resilient, and create new offers for leisure, sports, and social encounters.
The project is a sustainable redevelopment of Marl's city center on an area of approximately 9.3 hectares. It includes the redesign of the Creiler Platz, the upgrading of the quarter around the Friedenspark, and the creation of climate-resilient open spaces. The Volkspark in Alt-Marl will also be upgraded as part of the IGA 2027.
The European Peace House will be an important green meeting place for Marl and the region, as part of the project's focus on urban green spaces. The funds for the renovation and redesign of the Volkspark in Marl as part of the IGA 2027 come from the federal program "Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change," with 4.4 million euros in federal funds and 500,000 euros from the city's budget.
Marl will receive around 3 million euros in state funding for the project "Ruhrmodern - Our City Administration". This brings the total available for the project to 4.9 million euros. The city of Marl is the recipient and responsible for the project as part of its contribution to the IGA 2027.
The third star is the highest level in the IGA qualification process and honors projects that have a unique selling point and a cross-cutting concept. The "Ruhrmodern - Our City Administration" project has successfully established Marl in the IGA 2027 qualification process.
In addition to the financial support, the project also signifies that Marl's project is now among the "Our Gardens" projects, which will receive special funding within the IGA 2027. This means that the city of Marl has truly established itself in the IGA 2027 qualification process. Approximately 10 million euros will be invested in the city center as part of this project.
The focus of the project is on ecological, social, and urban redevelopment, as well as strengthening urban green spaces. The project has already shown great promise and is expected to significantly contribute to the IGA 2027 in the Ruhr Metropolis.
