Imminent plans of Sophie Walz, the newly appointed opera director
Sophie Walz, a seasoned theatre professional with a passion for opera, has been appointed as the new Opera Director at the State Theatre Augsburg. Walz, who was born in Ulm, brings a unique blend of artistic interests and a commitment to transparency and feedback to her new role.
Walz's love for opera was nurtured from a young age, thanks to her parents, both teachers, who introduced her to the world of opera, theater, and museums. Her professional journey began in 2017 when she joined the State Theatre Augsburg as the leading dramaturg for music theater and ballet.
Before her tenure at the State Theatre Augsburg, Walz served as the Head Dramaturg for Music Theatre and Ballet at the State Theatre Augsburg. Her years in Dessau and Zwickau were particularly formative, marked by a daily struggle with precarious means. These experiences honed her understanding of theater as a societal space and deepened her connection with the theater.
Walz's artistic interests span across Early Music and contemporary opera. Forgotten singspiels and Mozart's Da Ponte operas like "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni" hold a special place in her heart. Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's works are on Walz's wishlist, reflecting her inclination towards diverse and innovative opera.
Closeness to family was a deciding factor in Walz's move to Augsburg. She now resides in Lechhausen, Augsburg, and finds balance by the Lech river. Walz appreciates the structured way of working and the focus on ensemble care demonstrated by her predecessor, Daniel Herzog.
In her new role, Walz takes over the ensemble of her predecessor and shares a common goal with the State Theatre Augsburg to further develop the music theater.
