Impact on 5 Million Germans: Certain foods exacerbate joint discomfort

Osteoarthritis, the most prevalent joint disease among adults, affects an estimated 5 million Germans as per the German Osteoarthritis Foundation. However, research by NDR suggests that the number could be as high as 8 million.

This degenerative joint disorder, characterised by a progressive wearing away of the joints, damages both the cartilage and surrounding bones. Symptoms include pain during or at rest, stiffness in the joints, and swelling during inflammatory episodes. Osteoarthritis can occur in various joints such as the knee, back, hip, or hands.

The high prevalence of osteoarthritis in Germany is primarily attributed to risk factors like increasing age, female gender (linked to hormonal changes during menopause), previous joint injuries or surgeries, and lifestyle factors such as alcohol and nicotine consumption. These factors significantly contribute to the disease, particularly in individuals over 55 years old.

Interestingly, overweight osteoarthritis patients can significantly reduce their symptoms by adopting a targeted change in diet. Studies show that less weight being placed on the affected joints can significantly alleviate symptoms in these patients. A balanced diet, which helps manage weight, is therefore crucial in relieving the joints.

It's worth noting that diet plays a crucial role in the development and progression of osteoarthritis. Consumption of sugar and saturated fats, for instance, promotes the release of the hormone leptin, which can encourage inflammation and cartilage damage.

Typical symptoms of osteoarthritis include morning pain, pain after exertion, or during humid, cold weather. However, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

In conclusion, osteoarthritis is a common and significant health issue in Germany, with potential remedies lying in lifestyle changes, particularly dietary ones. Awareness and early intervention can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected.
