In a bid to make public transport future-proof, well-connected, and climate-friendly, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has been providing funding since 2019. This investment totals 1.3 billion euros, with the aim of modernizing aging municipal rail infrastructure across the region.

One of the landmarks set to benefit from this funding is the suspension railway in Wuppertal, which is intended to become a future-proof landmark and backbone of public transport in the city. The city is receiving funds for renovating suspension railway stations, with the renovation expected to cost around 46 million euros.

The renovation involves several improvements, including new flooring, updated passenger information systems, modernized elevators, and tactile guidance systems for visually impaired individuals. These changes are designed to enhance accessibility for all passengers by 2030, as stated by the city's goal.

Frank Scheffer, who coordinates construction projects in North Rhine-Westphalia, has been responsible for diverse projects including climate protection concepts and infrastructure developments in the region. He presented 13 funding decisions to transport companies in NRW, with Sabine Schnake, Managing Director of WSW mobil GmbH, stating that the funding is necessary to make public transport future-proof, well-connected, and climate-friendly.

These funding decisions align with the state's aim of modern, demand-oriented mobility. Krischer, who presented the decisions, emphasized that they are part of the state's efforts to make public transport in NRW future-proof, well-connected, and climate-friendly.

The funding program also aims to improve accessibility for all passengers, as part of the goal in Wuppertal to achieve this by 2030. This investment in public transport infrastructure is a significant step towards creating a sustainable and efficient transportation system for the future.
