Improvements impact traveler experience in Karlsruhe

In a bid to improve the situation for passengers at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, the Ministry of Transport is taking action. The state is pre-financing 2.4 million euros due to the cancellation of an agreement by the federal government in autumn 2024.

The funds will be used to help acquire two additional security lanes and a multi-level baggage screening system. The new security lanes are expected to help eliminate congestion at check-in and reduce delays, while the baggage screening system will be refinanced through the Aviation Security Fee, as with the federal government.

The new baggage screening system is expected to take around six months to be implemented due to complex procurement procedures and manufacturing. The Ministry of Transport will cover the costs of the multi-level baggage screening system, while the Government Presidency of Stuttgart will acquire the two additional security lanes, with initial costs borne by the Ministry of Transport.

In the first half of 2025, around 700 passengers at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport experienced delays. To address this issue, the airport is taking measures to mitigate staff shortages due to illness with a pool of control forces and a reserve of personnel.

In addition, the airport has submitted an application for airport coordination, effective from the summer flight schedule 2026. This coordination aims to enable the airport to have a say in the flight schedules of airlines, spreading out departure times and improving passenger flow.

Berthold Frieß, Ministerial Director at the Ministry of Transport, stated that urgent action is needed to minimize passenger standstills. Minister Winfried Hermann has asked Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder to support a prioritized processing of the airport coordination application.

Situation-specific measures are being taken on-site to improve passenger flow at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. The new multi-level baggage screening system will be acquired by the RPS and the VM. The authority responsible for covering the costs of two additional layers of security at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport in a short-term emergency case is not explicitly identified in the provided search results.
