In a significant development, the long-awaited gameplay unveil of Edmund McMillen's new tactical RPG Mewgenics is out, showcasing the chilling activities your feline companions will engage in, guaranteed to be as horrifying as ever.

Edmund McMillen, the developer behind the acclaimed The Binding of Isaac, has unveiled his latest creation: Mewgenics. A 50-minute-long gameplay video showcased the unique blend of strategy and cat breeding that sets Mewgenics apart.

In Mewgenics, players take charge of a house full of cats. Each day, they can select a group of these felines and venture into a randomly generated map for turn-based combat encounters on an isometric tile grid. Combat is not just about brute force; players can damage their own units and use the environment to their advantage, similar to McMillen's previous game, Into the Breach.

Each cat in Mewgenics has unique abilities and passives, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay. How you build each cat is crucial, as it will determine what traits it passes on, allowing you to create an army of "Überkatze." However, inbreeding could potentially be an issue, as mentioned by the developer.

After a run, cats return to the stray house, eat, and may mate. While players cannot choose who breeds with whom, the offspring will level up and draw from a pool of over 1,200 abilities they can learn. The game functions like a deckbuilder after each battle, with each kitty leveling up and acquiring new abilities.

Mewgenics also features events that play like D&D skill checks, allowing players to use their cats' stats outside of combat. Enemy units have unique abilities as well, such as kittens running away after taking damage and Tom Toms dealing damage in large areas of effect.

Permadeath is a feature in Mewgenics, but it takes several hits after a cat is downed to finish them off permanently, resulting in lowered stats or debuffs. This adds an extra layer of strategy, as players must decide when to retreat and when to push forward.

Initially announced in 2012, Mewgenics has been eagerly anticipated by fans of McMillen's work. The release date for this intriguing indie game is set for February 10, 2026. Until then, there are other upcoming indie games to get excited for while waiting for Mewgenics.

Mewgenics, with its blend of strategy, cat breeding, and unique mechanics, promises to be a fresh and exciting addition to the indie gaming scene.
