In a thrilling triumph, Bayern prevails over Bayer in a double-header, captivating a crowd of record-breaking spectators

In a closely contested match attended by 57,762 spectators at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich began their Bundesliga campaign with a home victory against Bayer Leverkusen.

The first half saw Leverkusen displaying some attacking flair, with Carlotta Wamser, a new signing from Eintracht Frankfurt, impressing on the right side of defence and initiating many of their attacks. However, Bayern Munich struggled to find their rhythm, with few chances created.

Giulia Gwinn, Bayern's captain, attributed her team's struggles to the large crowd, including football legends Uli Hoeneß, Lothar Matthäus, and Bernd Neuendorf. She expressed concerns about Bayern's performance during the half-time break.

José Barcala, the new head coach of FC Bayern Munich's women's football team, made substitutions in an attempt to improve Bayern's performance, bringing on Klara Bühl and Pernille Harder.

The second half saw a change in fortunes for Bayern Munich. Vanessa Gilles scored the first goal for Bayern in the 76th minute, heading in Klara Bühl's corner. Barely a minute later, Bühl scored a second goal for Bayern, securing the win.

Pernille Harder came on for Bayern Munich after the break, but it was Klara Bühl who provided the team with much-needed pace and freshness. Her introduction seemed to invigorate Bayern, as they managed to find their rhythm and create more chances.

Lea Schüller had the only clear chance for Bayern Munich in the second minute, but her shot went wide. Jovana Damnjanovic set up Bühl for her second goal, and Damnjanovic nearly gave Leverkusen the lead in the 68th minute, hitting the crossbar.

Bayern's new coach, Barcala, looked visibly frustrated on the sidelines, as his team failed to live up to their title-winning form. Barcala, a 43-year-old Spaniard, brings new impulses and a clear modern football philosophy to Munich, aiming to win titles and continue the team's recent successes, including their seventh Bundesliga title in 2024/25.

Giulia Gwinn suggested that Leverkusen played more freely due to their familiarity with playing in front of large crowds, which may have contributed to Bayern's initial struggles. Despite the rocky start, Bayern managed to turn the game around and secure a 2-0 victory, kicking off their Bundesliga season on a positive note.
