In Dusseldorf, the Johanniter's "paving truck" delivers medical aid to the homeless community.

In the heart of Düsseldorf, a former ambulance, now known as the "Patching Truck," is making a significant difference for the city's homeless population. This innovative project, launched in collaboration with the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, has filled a much-needed gap in medical care for the visitors of the Goodnight Bus.

Every Monday evening, the Patching Truck rolls out, equipped with materials for wound care and diagnostics. From 10 PM to 11 PM at Dominikanerkirche/Kommödchen in the old town and from 11:30 PM to 12:30 AM at the main station (Karlstraße/Ecke Friedrich-Ebert-Straße), the truck parks next to the Goodnight Bus, aiming to build trust with those in need.

The Patching Truck's mission is to provide basic medical first aid and mediate for greater needs, calling emergency services if necessary. The team, staffed by two to three volunteers, is currently considering adding a doctor to their ranks. Etemad Parishanzadeh, one of the paramedics who volunteers for the project, is among those dedicated to making a difference.

Life on the streets in Düsseldorf is hard, and the number of homeless people is constantly increasing. Many of them are in poor physical and mental health, with chronic wounds, skin infections, or infections that can become life-threatening due to cold, heat, poor nutrition, and hygiene, and often alcohol and drug abuse. The lack of health insurance and questions about personal details at official institutions are obstacles for the homeless to get medical treatment.

The Patching Truck offers a solution to these challenges. The medical staff on the truck works mainly on a voluntary basis and is prepared for the deployments. Regular wound dressing changes are a problem for the homeless on the streets, and the Patching Truck aims to address this issue directly.

The project is funded exclusively by donations, and more volunteers, especially those with medical knowledge, are welcome to join the team. The Johanniter's help is anonymous, free, and accessible to everyone. Vision:teilen, another organisation offering warm meals, clean clothes, and a listening ear at two stations in the old town and at the main station, is also a valuable resource for Düsseldorf's homeless population.

Together, these initiatives are striving to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most, offering hope and healing on the streets of Düsseldorf.
