In response to the Sumy bombings, Ukraine counterstrikes with a drone assault
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, two significant incidents have taken place over the past few days.
Overnight, the western Russian city of Kursk was targeted by Ukrainian combat drones. These attacks, according to Ukrainian military commander Olexandr Syrskyj, have prevented hundreds of thousands of tons of ammunition, equipment, and fuel from reaching Russian troops along the front lines in Ukraine. However, these claims regarding the Kursk attack could not be independently verified.
The impact of these attacks was not limited to the military, as there is at least one fatality and nine injured in Kursk, according to the state news agency Tass. Several buildings in Kursk, including a garage with ambulances, were set on fire.
Meanwhile, in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, at least 35 people died over the weekend in a Russian rocket attack. The major cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv were targeted by Russian combat drones in recent months. The gathering of soldiers near the Russian border in Sumy's congress hall was criticized by regional officials as a potential target for Russian attacks. Governor Volodymyr Artjuch of Sumy region reported a gathering of military personnel in the city, which he was invited to.
Russia described the rocket strike as an attack on a military target - a meeting of enemy commanders. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov reiterated that the Russian army only shoots at military or military-related targets.
In response to the Sumy attack, several Western politicians, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, have condemned the Russian rocket attack on Sumy. Two ballistic missiles of the Iskander-M type were used in the attack, according to Russian reports.
Ukrainian military commander Olexandr Syrskyj attached a video showing the destruction of various types of Russian military vehicles, including tanks, by drones. The Ukrainian military claims to have destroyed thousands of Russian military vehicles since the beginning of the year. Since the start of 2024, the Ukrainian military has destroyed more than 35,000 enemy vehicle units, according to Syrskyj.
As the conflict continues, both sides have faced criticism and condemnation from the international community. The ongoing violence has led to devastating losses for civilians and military personnel alike, and the search for peace and stability in the region remains a top priority.
