In the course of a year, Sheinbaum continues to maintain the title of Mexico's most well-liked president in many decades.
Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum Garners High Approval Ratings Ahead of State of the Nation Address
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's President, is set to deliver her first State of the Nation Address on Monday from the National Palace at 11 a.m. According to a poll conducted by the Mitofsky Group for the newspaper El Economista, 71.4% of those polled support Sheinbaum's management of the country. Another poll by Buendía & Marquez for the newspaper El Universal found 70% support for Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum's approval rating has been consistently high, surpassing that of her predecessors Andreés Manuel López Obrador, Vicente Fox, Felipe Calderón, and Enrique Peña Nieto at similar stages of their terms. A notable 58% of those surveyed said Sheinbaum has exceeded their expectations, while nearly 66% believe Mexico is better off than when Sheinbaum took office last October.
However, concerns regarding primary issues persist. The economy, corruption, and unemployment are the most pressing issues, with 9%, 8.1%, and 5.6% of those surveyed expressing these concerns respectively. Notably, nearly 46% of those surveyed identify the lack of security as the primary problem the country faces.
In the realm of crime, 4% of those surveyed believe Sheinbaum is successfully fighting crime, while only 9.7% indicate that Sheinbaum's biggest shortcoming thus far is failing to adequately combat crime. The management of foreign policy came in sixth in the survey.
Sheinbaum's presidency has been marked by political support primarily from left-wing groups and figures aligned with progressive and feminist agendas, including some international leaders like Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil. However, she has also faced criticism and opposition from right-wing parties and some senators within Mexico, especially regarding security and drug cartel policies.
Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez will present the printed version of the constitutionally mandated annual report to Congress in the morning.
The top achievements identified by those surveyed for Sheinbaum are social welfare programs, scholarships for students, support for senior citizens, and support for women. Her approval rating reached 78% near the 100-day mark of her term.
As Sheinbaum prepares to address the nation, the high approval ratings and the issues of concern will undoubtedly shape the discourse of her State of the Nation Address.
