The city of Lünen is proud to announce the successful completion and inauguration of its new educational jewel, the Realschule Altlünen. This significant investment in education, officially opened on September 3, 2025, is more than just a school building; it's a testament to Lünen's commitment to the future.

Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns, in his speech, emphasised the importance of safety, quality, and the future of children. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the construction of the new school building, from planners to builders, the administration, and the teaching staff.

The Realschule Lünen-Altlünen was constructed as a KfW-40-EE building, incorporating sustainable features such as a photovoltaic system, battery storage, heat recovery, and a green roof. This eco-friendly design not only reduces the school's carbon footprint but also serves as a practical learning tool for students.

The new school building, now home to the Realschule Altlünen, offers a modern, accessible environment. A comprehensive barrier-free concept, including an elevator, ground-level access, and guidance systems, ensures that all students can navigate the school with ease. Modern soundproofing measures have been implemented to improve learning conditions, while the building's state-of-the-art facilities include differentiation rooms, high-performance digital equipment for iPad classes, an auditorium, cafeteria, and a permanently installed stage for theater, concerts, and communal singing.

The construction of the new school building was necessitated by the old one not meeting fire safety standards. Despite the originally calculated cost of 13.5 million euros, various factors such as delays, labor shortages, and legal disputes led to an eventual cost of over 30 million euros. Mayor Kleine-Frauns acknowledges that the cost increases have much to do with the framework conditions under which municipalities build.

Democracy education has a fixed place in the new school building, with an annual project about the 9th of November prepared in different grade levels. This emphasis on civic education underscores Lünen's commitment to fostering informed, engaged citizens.

The investment in the new school building is expected to have long-term benefits for future generations. With its sustainable design, modern facilities, and focus on education and civic engagement, the Realschule Altlünen truly represents Lünen's investment in education and its vision for the future.
