Indian-manufactured Maruti Suzuki Fronx achieves milestone of exporting 100,000 units within 25 months of launch
Nissan and Maruti Suzuki's Export Success in India's Automotive Sector
India's automotive industry is making a significant impact on the global market, with companies like Nissan and Maruti Suzuki leading the charge.
The Nissan Magnite, manufactured at its Oragadam plant in Tamil Nadu, has become a global volume driver for the company. In FY 2024-25, Nissan announced it had exported over 1.5 lakh units of the Magnite, reflecting its success in markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki's Fronx SUV has been making waves in the international market. The vehicle, which is manufactured exclusively at Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat facility, has reached the 1 lakh export mark in just 25 months since exports began in June 2023. In FY 2024-25, the Fronx was the highest-exported passenger vehicle from India, with over 69,000 units dispatched.
Maruti Suzuki's export growth in FY 2024-25 was driven by the Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, among others. In Q1 of FY 2025-26, Maruti exported over 96,000 vehicles, accounting for 47% of India's total passenger vehicle exports. The company has been the top passenger vehicle exporter in India for four consecutive financial years. Currently, Maruti exports 17 models to nearly 100 countries.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx has been particularly successful in the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and Japan, with significant export volumes to Mexico and Japan notable since July 2023. Local automotive journalists in Japan have echoed positive sentiment about the Fronx, further strengthening its belief in the product's global appeal. The vehicle's rapid export success feeds directly into India's 'Make in India' initiative.
Hyundai Motor India also plays a key role in India's automotive exports. Its Chennai plant serves as a global hub for small car production. The company crossed the 3 million cumulative export mark in 2020 and exports popular models like the Verna, i20, and Creta to over 85 countries.
The success of these companies in the export market is a testament to the quality and competitiveness of India's automotive industry on the global stage. As these companies continue to expand their reach, India's position as a major player in the global automotive market is set to grow.
