Individual succumbs to crypto scam, forfeiting €1.2 million in digital assets
Headline: Warning Issued Over Cybertrading Fraud in Bodensee District
In the Bodensee district, residents are being targeted by a new form of fraud known as Cybertrading Fraud, with several cases reported in Friedrichshafen, Überlingen, and Ravensburg.
The scam involves criminals posing as brokers on supposed cryptocurrency trading platforms, advertising their offers on seemingly serious websites. These platforms usually require a simple registration before demanding an initial investment.
One victim, a man from Friedrichshafen, lost 1.2 million euros after agreeing to proposed transactions and transferring his money to various foreign accounts. Another resident from Überlingen was defrauded of 160,000 euros, while a resident from Ravensburg lost 300,000 euros.
The criminals exert intense pressure on their victims, claiming that the initial investments will lead to immediate success. However, when the consumers want to withdraw their supposed profits, the website and contact persons are often unreachable.
Small payouts may also be given to maintain the illusion of profitability, but as the Landeskriminalpolizei and Cybercrime Center warn, these platforms are fraudulent.
To protect assets and prevent losses, the authorities recommend several measures. These include raising employee and public awareness about fraud methods, sensitizing especially senior citizens to potential dangers, and advising verification of callers claiming to be relatives.
Additionally, it is crucial to avoid pressure during calls, report suspicious contacts to the police, use safe storage for valuables, and coordinate with banks that provide real-time fraud warnings and 24/7 customer support. Immediate reporting of fraud attempts and securing account access with strong passwords and rapid response are also emphasized.
If one becomes a victim of fraud, it is important to file a criminal complaint. Confidential data such as online banking or deposit access data should not be disclosed, and no copies of IDs or payment cards should be sent.
When considering an investment, do not let oneself be pressured. Take time to carefully examine and evaluate the offer before making any decisions. It is also advisable for consumers to thoroughly inform themselves about trading platforms before registering or transferring money.
