Ineos Grenadiers face potential addition of Derek Gee, claims contradicted by Israel-Premier Tech, who declare the contract breach illegal
In a surprising turn of events, Canadian cyclist Derek Gee is attempting to break his contract with the Israel-Premier Tech team, with Ineos Grenadiers reportedly interested in signing him.
Gee, who signed a five-year contract extension with Israel-Premier Tech in 2023, first came to prominence during the Giro d'Italia in 2023. His battling riding style netted him four second places on stages, and he also gained second places in the mountains and points classifications during the race.
Despite not securing any actual victories during the Giro d'Italia in 2023, Gee's lack of victories gained him many fans as the plucky underdog. His more recent results are beginning to mark him out as a genuine Grand Tour contender, with Gee finishing fourth at the Giro d'Italia this year and ninth at last season's Tour de France.
The public litigation of a transfer row is reasonably unique in this case. Israel-Premier Tech believes that Gee's contract is valid until 2028, but Gee's lawyers have issued a notice of termination. The UCI is involved in discussions to resolve the situation, and no official confirmation has been made by any of the parties involved regarding Gee's move to Ineos Grenadiers.
Meanwhile, Remco Evenepoel is moving to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe next season. Soudal Quick-Step and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe have agreed on compensation for Evenepoel's early contract termination.
Cian Uijtdebroeks has also made a mid-contract move in the past, and it remains to be seen if Gee's transfer will follow a similar path.
It is worth noting that Gee was scheduled to start the Vuelta a EspanΜa at the weekend, but was taken off the start list. This move has added to the speculation surrounding Gee's future and the ongoing contract dispute.
As the situation unfolds, fans and cycling enthusiasts will be watching with bated breath to see if Gee will be able to secure a move to Ineos Grenadiers and continue his impressive racing career.
