Infant's Mother in Idaho Adopts Plea Agreement Following Safe Haven Box Deposit
In a court hearing on Thursday, Angel Newberry from Twin Falls was sentenced to probation for leaving her dead baby in a Safe Haven Baby Box in Blackfoot, Idaho, last year.
At the age of 18, Newberry gave birth to the baby in her bathroom and did not alert her family or law enforcement about the birth. She also did not report the death of her newborn child or inform the authorities between the time she dropped off the baby at the baby box and being contacted by investigators.
The incident occurred at the Safe Haven Baby Box, located in Blackfoot, Idaho, which is designed to provide a safe and anonymous place for newborn babies to be left without fear of prosecution. However, the baby was found dead upon discovery.
The details of the incident were obtained by KTVB from a probable cause affidavit. Originally charged with a felony, Newberry's charge was reduced to a misdemeanor. As part of her sentence, Newberry must serve one year of probation and complete 10 hours of community service.
At the time of her arrest, Newberry was 18 years old. She changed her plea to guilty in the case. Newberry must also comply with all the terms and conditions of her probation, including regular check-ins with her probation officer.
