On September 23 at 12:30 pm, the August Everding Cultural Center will play host to the "Art Break" event, showcasing the works of artist Barbara Schmitz-Becker in the B12 exhibition space. The event marks the opening of Schmitz-Becker's exhibition, MY INNER NATURE, which will run until October 25, 2025.
Schmitz-Becker's works do not focus on biology but rather the structure, as seen in her installation CORALLIUM, which resembles a coral reef and explores themes of condensation and dissolution. The first installation visitors encounter upon entering the B12 is in the glass corridor, leading them to the room through the installation "From the Underground."
At the head of the room, an installation designed to look like color is pouring down the wall onto the floor awaits visitors. This installation is just one of the five further installations that make up MY INNER NATURE.
Schmitz-Becker found inspiration for one of her installations in lichens, creating an intricate arrangement of over 2,000 small "heads" of ceramic to mimic the organic growth of these organisms. The three-dimensionality, depth, and density in the room become more pronounced in the B12, with perspective changes being significant, especially in the CORALLIUM installation, where views from afar and close to the wall are both worthwhile.
The MY INNER NATURE exhibition will be opened by Mayor Monika Budke on August 30 at 11 am. Joelle Czampiel, who is affiliated with the Ludwiggalerie Schloss Oberhausen, will give the introduction to the exhibition. Schmitz-Becker expresses fondness for the exhibition room, finding it difficult to leave.
Artist tours with Barbara Schmitz-Becker are scheduled for September 13 at 11 am and October 9 at 6 pm, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn more about her creative process and the inspiration behind her works. The objects and installations in the B12 are meant to be seen as a whole, with each visitor's perspective influencing their unique experience of the art.
A total of 4,500 push pins were used for fixation in the MY INNER NATURE installations, with the materials varying from wire, paper, or clay. The installations recall fungal networks or rhizomes, forming formations that seem alive and tangible.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the B12 during the MY INNER NATURE exhibition, taking in the intricate details and ever-changing perspectives of Schmitz-Becker's works. The unique exhibition space, described by Schmitz-Becker as a "true stroke of luck," promises an immersive and thought-provoking experience for all who attend.
