Inmate perishes in blaze within his cell at Sanitary Penitentiary
In an unexpected turn of events, a fire broke out at the overcrowded SantΓ© Prison in Paris early on August 30, 2020. The prison, which normally houses 657 inmates, was operating at a staggering 189.2% capacity, accommodating 1,243 prisoners.
The fire, which started in one of the cells, was brought under control around 6 am on Sunday morning by a team of 60 firefighters who deployed approximately 15 vehicles. Fortunately, no prison guards were injured during the incident.
However, the tragedy did not end there. One prisoner, whose identity remains undisclosed in the available sources, perished in the fire. Details regarding the circumstances surrounding his planned release on October 22, 2020, are also scarce in the provided search results.
Four other prisoners were transferred to the hospital for respiratory examinations due to smoke inhalation. Thankfully, their conditions are reported to be stable at present.
To ensure the safety of the remaining inmates and prison staff, the regional intervention and security teams (Eris) of the prison administration were deployed to secure the facility during the firefighters' intervention.
It is a grim reminder of the challenges faced by overcrowded prisons and the urgent need for reform. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
