Intense Russian air attacks in Ukraine claim lives in Kiev
In recent developments, Slovak President Robert Fico reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed interest in meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on neutral ground. However, no new information about the deployment of Western protection troops to Ukraine has been provided.
Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy has spoken about a potential meeting outside of Moscow with Russian President Putin. Discussions are being prepared for a possible meeting in a third country such as Turkey or Gulf states, but Moscow has demanded careful preparation and lower-level negotiations first.
The ongoing conflict has led to increased military activity in Ukraine's border regions. Polish and allied aircraft are operating in the area, with military aircraft deployed, ground-based air defense, and radar surveillance systems on high alert.
The city of Cherson, in particular, has been heavily affected. Explosions were reported in the city, resulting in numerous buildings being damaged or destroyed, including a multi-story residential building in Kyiv that claimed one life and left eleven injured. Ukraine's deputy mayor of Cherson reported that every single high-rise in the Korabel district of Cherson is damaged.
President Zelensky has emphasized the need to further develop Ukraine's air defense to protect from Russian drones and missiles. Unfortunately, no details have been provided on the status of Ukrainian air defense system development and production.
Russia, on the other hand, continues to conduct heavy air strikes on Ukraine, with hundreds of combat drones and cruise missiles attacking cities across the country, according to local media reports. The Kremlin continues to pressure Ukraine to surrender.
Anton Hofreiter, the chairman of the Bundestag's European Affairs Committee, believes the debate on the possible deployment of Western protection troops to Ukraine is misguided. No new information about his stance on the matter has been provided.
Despite the escalating tensions, President Putin earlier this week said Zelensky could come to Moscow if there was a prospect of a "good outcome." However, Putin has expressed interest in a meeting with Zelensky "somewhere else" than Moscow, which comes as a surprise as Putin has previously avoided such a meeting.
The cityscape of Cherson is heavily marked by the war, with hundreds of other buildings also damaged or destroyed. The situation remains volatile, and updates are expected as the situation develops.
