Interactive Resource for Family Health Matters
In the heart of Bamberg, the city known for its medieval architecture, a unique health project is making a significant impact on the local community. The "With Migrants for Migrants - Intercultural Health in Bavaria (MiMi-Bayern)" health project, now a fixture in the city for 13 years, is a collaborative effort between the Ethno-Medical Center e.V. and numerous project partners throughout the state.
Recently, MiMi-Bayern held a health day as part of the meeteinander leisure festival at the Ost Youth Center. The event was a bustling hub of information and activities, with the focus on low-threshold health offers for families in the Bamberg region. The conversations revolved around the mental health of children and young people, a crucial aspect often overlooked in health discussions.
The day was filled with engaging activities. An oversized dental model was used to demonstrate dental brushing skills using a giant toothbrush, while a sugar exhibition displayed foods and drinks with the corresponding number of sugar cubes hidden within. This visual representation served as a stark reminder of the hidden sugars in our daily diets.
Visitors could also learn about various aspects of family health at the MiMi-Bayern stand. The state-recognized counseling center for pregnancy issues at the Bamberg District Office offered comprehensive, free, and confidential support for all questions related to pregnancy, childbirth, family planning, and life with a child. A mega floor newspaper with a quiz about Hepatitis C was available for participants to test their knowledge.
The Intercultural MiMi Mediators, who passed on their knowledge in their native language to fellow countrymen in Bamberg, covered 20 different topics. The mediators included Marina Glasunova, Anca Marza, and Tatjana Schell, along with Yvonne RΓΌttger as the project coordinator and Sarah Scheller from the Bamberg Health Department.
The coordination office at the Bamberg City Office for Inclusion, in cooperation with the Bamberg Health Department, has trained numerous Intercultural MiMi Mediators. These mediators ensure that the information sessions can be held in the languages Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, German, English, French, Kurdish, Persian, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
The "Klarwerk - if everything sucks" program, a joint project that provides important information and support for children, young people, and families in dealing with psychological stress, was also present at the health day. Further information on the online offers and comprehensive support services can be found at www.klaerwerk-bamberg.de.
MiMi-Bayern promotes the health literacy of migrants through multilingual and culturally sensitive information. The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care, and Prevention and supported by MSD Sharp & Dohme GmbH.
