International Gathering: France Discloses Attendees of the Collaborative Group Meeting in Paris
In a significant show of unity, European leaders convened in Paris on September 4, 2022, for the Coalition of the Willing discussions, co-chaired by France and the UK. The gathering aimed to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and explore ways to bolster its security.
Among the attendees were French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Romanian President Nicușor Dan, and Iceland's Foreign Minister Karin Gunnarsdóttir. The in-person meeting was also attended by seven additional European leaders: Bart De Wever, Dick Schoof, Mette Frederiksen, Alexander Stubb, Donald Tusk, Pedro Sánchez, and Ursula von der Leyen.
Notably absent from the meeting were leaders from Slovakia, Hungary, and Malta. However, the discussions were joined remotely by a diverse array of leaders from around 20 countries, including Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulídis, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
Türkiye was represented by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, while Austria was represented by Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger.
President Macron announced that the allies had finalised security guarantees for Ukraine, which are now ready for political approval. However, Chancellor Merz clarified that there are no concrete plans - "at least not in Germany" - to deploy troops in Ukraine.
António Costa, the Prime Minister of Portugal, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, were also present at the meeting, having arrived in Paris the previous day.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and leaders from around 33 countries in total took part in the meeting, which was held in Paris to discuss and support Ukraine's security and stability.
