Dresden, a city known for its Baroque architecture and vibrant culture, is set to introduce new e-scooter and e-bike sharing services in August 2025. This expansion aims to provide more options for mobility, ensure the devices function well, and generate additional revenue for the municipal budget.

The city had called for expressions of interest in operating bike-sharing and e-scooter-sharing services in May 2025, and after evaluating suitability criteria, several providers have been granted permits. Two providers, LIME and VOI, will launch with a total of 2,000 e-bikes in Dresden from August 1st. Three other providers, BOLT, VOI, and RideMovi, will launch with a combined 2,500 e-scooters.

The new providers will implement the "Sharing Guidelines for Mobility" for the first time. These guidelines include requirements such as adherence to fleet distribution quotas, photo and geolocation verification, detection of improperly parked vehicles, short response times, regular communication with visually impaired and mobility-impaired people, and provision of geolocation data for city monitoring.

The new e-scooters and e-bikes supplement the urban MOBIbikes, which have been the most successful bike-sharing offer in Germany in recent years due to their reliability, affordability, good service, and integration into public transport. They are responsible for over 6,500 trips daily.

The new e-scooters and e-bikes can be rented out more intensively as feeder services to the train station or for direct trips, improving mobility for many people in Dresden due to its height differences and long distances.

Dresden aims to strengthen the order of the sharing systems by setting up provider-neutral sharing stations in sensitive pedestrian areas. The operation of sharing services will no longer be exempt from permits and fees, replacing previous cooperation agreements with individual providers.

Stephan KΓΌhn, Mayor for Transport, stated that the expansion of sharing services is a response to the growing demand for alternative modes of transport in recent years. Measures to maintain order and increase acceptance in the city will be continuously evaluated and developed.

However, there may be an increase in improperly parked vehicles during the transition period in some areas. Digital blocking zones will be set up around these stations, allowing returns only within those zones. An interim assessment and possible readjustment are planned after one year.

In the case of the e-scooters, the existing LIME e-scooters in the city will be replaced by the new services. The specific companies that receive a special permit to operate 2,500 e-scooters in Dresden in August 2025 are yet to be announced.

This expansion of sharing services is set to revolutionise the way people travel in Dresden, making it more accessible and environmentally friendly.
