Investigating the authentic behind Ed and Lorraine Warren's final paranormal investigation

In the world of horror cinema, the "Conjuring" universe remains a chilling success, with "Conjuring 4: The Last Chapter" currently terrifying audiences in theatres. But what about the real-life events that inspired these films?

One such case was the so-called "Smurl haunting," a series of supernatural events that reportedly plagued a family in the USA since 1974. Contrary to the portrayal in the films, the Smurl haunting involved four ghosts and one demon, as opposed to three ghosts influenced by a demon.

The Smurl family, along with paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and journalist Robert Curran, detailed their experiences in a book released in 1986. The Warrens, a real-life demon-hunting couple, reported foul odors, sudden temperature drops, moving objects, and direct confrontations with the Smurl house's demon. However, like with their other cases, they were unable to prove their claims regarding the Smurl haunting.

Scientists suggest that the Smurls' experiences could have been due to delusions, hallucinations, or brain damage. It's worth noting that there was never any mention of Judy Warren, a character featured in the films, having anything to do with the "Smurl haunting" events in reality.

After the family moved, Debra Owens, who moved into the alleged haunted house in 1987, stated in interviews that she never noticed any supernatural occurrences. Despite the lack of evidence, the "Smurl haunting" remains one of the last cases the Warrens ever dealt with in reality.

Interestingly, Lorraine Warren served as a consultant for the first part of the series. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have been portraying Ed and Lorraine Warren since 2013, bringing these real-life figures to life on the silver screen.

As we continue to enjoy the thrills of the "Conjuring" universe, it's important to remember that while these films are based on real-life events, they often take creative liberties for the sake of storytelling. The true story of the Smurl haunting serves as a fascinating reminder of the line between fact and fiction in the world of paranormal investigations.
