In a shocking turn of events, a knife attack occurred at a vocational college in Essen, leaving a 45-year-old teacher seriously injured. The suspect, a 17-year-old student, was also involved in the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment in intensive care.

The suspect fled the scene after the attack and was later apprehended during a police operation in a nearby park, where he reportedly drew a knife. Officers used firearms to stop the suspect, but the police in Essen are not currently investigating the use of firearms in this case. Instead, the investigation is being handled by the police headquarters in Bochum.

The motive behind the attack is currently under investigation by a homicide commission, which has been set up to investigate the incident. The city of Essen has also taken steps to ensure the safety of the school community, hiring a security service for the school grounds.

Local politicians have also weighed in on the incident. SPD interior expert Christina Kampmann, a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament and an interior policy expert, has called for consequences in response to the attack. She has publicly criticized Interior Minister Herbert Reul's handling of crime policy in NRW, including issues related to the stabbing incident at a school in Essen. She views Reul's approach as misguided and characterized by distraction tactics rather than effective crime control.

SPD has requested a "current fifteen minutes" for the discussion about the knife attack in Essen. The incident will also be discussed at the next meeting of the NRW state parliament's interior committee. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) has been asked to provide a first report and analysis of the conclusions he draws from the incident.

School psychologists are on site at the vocational college in Essen to provide support to students and staff. Classes at the college are expected to resume on Monday. The teacher's identity has not been disclosed at this time.

The police have confirmed that the teacher is now out of danger, but the community remains shaken by the incident. The investigation into the motive behind the attack continues.
