The German Bundestag, the country's federal parliament, is set to establish an Inquiry Commission on the Corona Pandemic on Monday. This commission, unlike an investigative committee, has fewer interrogation rights.

The commission, whose aim is to prepare for future pandemics, will be chaired by Franziska Hoppermann from the CDU. The leaders of the SPD, AfD, and Left factions will also be represented, albeit indirectly, with Jens Spahn (CDU), Matthias Miersch (SPD), Heidi Reichinnek, and SΓΆren Pellmann for the Left, among others.

The commission will comprise members from all major parties. The Union faction will send five representatives, while the SPD and the AfD will each send three. The Greens will send two members, and the Left will send one.

The commission's work does not appear to be directly related to the procurement of corona masks, as previously demanded by the opposition due to allegations against former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU). Instead, the commission is tasked with providing an overall picture of the pandemic, including its causes, course, and consequences, state measures, and evaluating them.

The commission's final report is expected to be submitted by the end of June 2027. This report is expected to offer valuable insights and recommendations for future pandemic preparedness and response strategies.
