Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on the Corona Pandemic Begins Work

The parliamentary inquiry committee on the Corona pandemic, established by the Bundestag with broad majority support from Union, SPD, Greens, and Left, held its constituent meeting this week. Chaired by Franziska Hoppermann, the committee aims to learn from the past to be better prepared for future comparable situations.

Hoppermann, in her opening remarks, emphasized the importance of examining state action during the pandemic and its impact on society intensively. She called for consensus-building rather than party strife and stressed the need for a comprehensive, honest, and balanced review of the crisis years.

The committee is composed of 14 MPs and 14 external experts, chosen to ensure balanced representation of federal states, municipalities, scientific disciplines, and societal sectors. The 14 external experts are specialists from various parts of society, such as teachers, scientists, and medical professionals. Their specific names have not been publicly listed, but their selection aims at a wide and balanced perspective.

Julia Kloeckner (CDU) is expected to attend the committee's constituent meeting. The committee's work involves critical questioning, analysis, and forward-looking learning. Hoppermann's goal is to paint a comprehensive, honest, and balanced picture of the pandemic time and submit a report with recommendations for future crises to the Bundestag by mid-2027.

The acute Corona pandemic began in 2020 and ended at Easter 2023. Hoppermann stated that the pandemic presented the country with one of the greatest challenges since the post-war period. The goal is to draw the right conclusions and move forward as a society.

In the previous legislative period, a large-scale evaluation of measures and restrictions at the federal level did not materialize. This committee aims to fill that gap and ensure that lessons are learned from the pandemic to better prepare for future crises. Hoppermann's goal is to learn from the past to be better prepared for the future.
