In a significant development, US forces conducted a raid early on Wednesday in northwestern Syria, resulting in the death of a senior member of the Islamic State (IS) group. The operation, which began at around 2am (11:00 GMT) in the town of Atmeh, in Idlib province, was carried out with the assistance of helicopters and drones providing air cover.

According to reports, the target of the raid was an Iraqi national, who was a senior member of the IS group. Local Syrian forces set up a cordon around the neighborhood, but US forces conducted the actual raid. The exact identity of the deceased IS group member has not been officially confirmed, but it is believed to be either Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi or Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, both former leaders of the IS group.

Reports suggest that the target was killed as he tried to escape, according to Syrian security sources and Syria's state-owned Al-Ikhbariya. However, no US troops were killed or injured in the raid. It is not immediately clear what happened to the target's wife, who is reported to be a French national.

It is worth noting that Idlib has been a hiding spot for senior IS group figures for years. The US-led coalition fighting the IS group includes the government that replaced Assad. The Islamist-led government that replaced Assad has pledged to prevent a resurgence of the IS group.

A neighbor, Abdelqader al-Sheikh, heard a noise in his yard next door during the raid. Another local, Sheikh, reported that someone nearby spoke Arabic in an Iraqi accent during the operation. The armed forces stayed on the rooftops of surrounding houses for two hours after the raid.

This raid marks the second time in northern Syria that US troops have conducted such an operation since Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December. In July, a senior IS group leader and his two adult IS group-affiliated sons were killed in a raid by Pentagon forces in Aleppo province.

The Pentagon did not immediately have any public comment on the reports, but it is evident that the US continues to take active measures against the IS group in Syria. The death of this senior member of the IS group could potentially weaken the group's leadership and disrupt its operations.
