Israel alleges strike on Abu Obaida
In a significant development, the Israeli military and Shin Bet have reportedly carried out an air strike in Gaza City, targeting Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas's armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.
According to Israeli Army Radio and Israel Hayom newspaper, the attack took place on August 30, 2025, in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, in the northern Gaza Strip. The IDF and Shin Bet used an air force aircraft in the operation.
The Israeli army statement claims that "terrorist organizations" in the Gaza Strip continue to systematically violate international law by exploiting civilian institutions and the civilian population as human shields. This attack, they assert, was a response to Abu Obeida's role as the spokesperson for the Al-Qassam Brigades, a key element of the Hamas "terrorist organization."
Prior to the attack, numerous steps were taken to minimize the possibility of harming civilians. These included the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence. However, the fate of Abu Obeida remains unknown following the attack.
Hamas has not yet responded to allegations made by the Israeli media and army regarding the attack on Abu Obeida. A senior Israeli source stated that if Abu Obeida was at the targeted location, he cannot survive the attack. However, the Palestinian group has not confirmed his death.
Reports suggest that the success of the assassination of Abu Obeida is being estimated by Hebrew media. Despite this, the exact circumstances surrounding the attack and the fate of Abu Obeida remain unclear.
This incident comes amidst ongoing tensions in the region, with both sides accusing each other of violations of international law and human shielding. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for de-escalation.
