Israel warns of imposing "individual actions" if Western nations officially acknowledge the establishment of the State of Palestine
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has been raging for nearly two years, has led to a worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The area has been severely affected by Israel's military campaign, with large areas destroyed and aid severely limited. This has pushed Palestinians to the brink of famine.
In August, Israel approved a controversial housing project to build 3,400 homes in a West Bank area, a move that has been criticized by the international community as a threat to the viability of a future Palestinian state. The area where the housing project was approved is believed to be a part of the West Bank, also known as Judea and Samaria by Israel.
The planned settlement expansion has intensified calls for the creation of a Palestinian state. Several Western countries have already recognized the Palestinian state in recent months, a move that has not gone unnoticed by the Israeli government. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has threatened to take unilateral measures if Western countries recognize the Palestinian state.
Saar has been vocal about his opposition to such recognition, stating that countries recognizing or intending to recognize Palestine as a state are "harming the prospects for peace." He has also criticized these states for rewarding and encouraging terrorism with a pay-for-slay doctrine, a practice where some countries provide financial compensation to terrorists and their families.
Israeli far-right Minister Bezalel Smotrich has gone a step further, warning European leaders that recognizing a Palestinian state in September could lead to the application of Israeli sovereignty over all parts of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).
Meanwhile, Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen has reminded that Denmark's official position is to only recognize a Palestinian state after a negotiated agreement between the parties. During a visit to Jerusalem, he made a threat of his own, stating that if Israel takes unilateral measures, Denmark might reconsider its aid to the country.
The intensified calls for the creation of a Palestinian state reflect growing concerns about the increasingly unsustainable humanitarian conditions that Palestinians face amid Israel's war against the Islamic group Hamas. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely and call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
